Hands Off Our Hometowns: Protect Local Zoning Controls

From data centers to marijuana stores to wind and solar farms, politicians in Lansing are gutting local zoning rights to dictate what our communities can and can't do.

Now, the State House is taking up a whole raft of bills to infringe on local control in your own neighborhood – and House Speaker Matt Hall is trying to RAM them through the House as quickly as possible.

House Bills 5529-32 and 5581-85 would BAN local governments from enacting a number of zoning laws, particularly against high-density housing in any neighborhood.

Tell your State Representative to defend local control and oppose these bills right now!

(Petitions will be delivered to Speaker Matt Hall, members of the Government Operations Committee, and committee clerk. If it passes committee, copies will be sent to your representative.)

Text of Petition

House Bills 5529-32 and 5581-85 would attack local zoning laws, mandating among other things:

• Houses that are only 500 square feet

• Minimum lot sizes of only 1500 square feet

• Duplexes in single-family neighborhoods

• Mobile homes in residential subdivisions

• In-law units in your neighbor's backyard

Right now, if a community thinks such a dense development is warranted, they certainly can approve it. If they want to approve a mobile home park or duplexes, they can. But these bills go too far: They would REQUIRE cities, townships and villages to approve a massive increase in traffic and new units, even over the objection of every single resident.

We call upon you to uphold local control and OPPOSE these bills.
