Don't Amend the State Constitution to Strip Delegates' Nominating Powers

Currently, candidates for Attorney General, Secretary of State, and university boards are nominated by state party delegates to avoid costly statewide campaigns that would drain the parties of money.

Senate Joint Resolution J would amend the Michigan Constitution to have Attorney General and Secretary of State candidates nominated directly in primary elections – which means candidates would spend millions of dollars just to win the nomination.

The result would be that, even more so than now, the candidate with the most money would be at a huge advantage.

The amendment would also have board members of the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University simply appointed by the governor: the people would get NO say.

Tell your lawmakers to OPPOSE Senate Joint Resolution J and not put the constitutional amendment on the ballot.

Text of Petition

We the undersigned oppose Senate Joint Resolution J, which would strip state party delegates of the power to nominate candidates for Attorney General, Secretary of State, and the boards of the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University.

In a primary scheme, these statewide offices would have expensive races in which the candidate with the most money will have a huge advantage.

We shouldn't amend Michigan's Constitution just because certain politicians don't agree with who their own party's delegates nominate for statewide office. We urge you to OPPOSE this proposed constitutional amendment.
